Rock In The Classroom Offers Songwriting Workshop For Educators

Jerry Appell, founder and artistic director of Rock In The Classroom, is conducting educational songwriting workshops at schools and educational conferences throughout the 2015-16 school year. The workshop “Creating Educational Songs and Music Videos” is designed to help educators and home school families discover a variety of ways to use songwriting and music as learning tools for students of all ages. He will be presenting this workshop at the National Council of Social Studies Annual Conference in New Orleans on November 15 as well as various other locales around the United States.

Jerry Appell created Rock In The Classroom in 2008 after receiving a grant from Antioch University to produce a series of educational songs. Since then he has enlisted the help of artists and musicians from the southern New England region to produce educational songs and music videos. Over the course of the past seven years Rock In the Classroom songs have been used for a wide variety of educational applications. College and high school curriculums have used Rock In The Classroom music videos as part of presentations on topics such as the Manifest Destiny in US History and the role of women in American Literature. Unlike most educational music that is geared toward children, Rock In The Classroom directs its songs towards a high school students, college students, and adult life long learners.

Jerry Appell has discussed this work on local radio broadcasts as well as being the focus of a Vermont Edition segment on Vermont Public Radio. Through Rock In The Classroom he conducts songwriting workshops for educators throughout the school year, produces customized songs for non-profit organizations, and offers an online song encyclopedia where educators can search for songs through a topic database. Most recently Rock In The Classroom is collaborating with therapist Holiday Eames on a series of therapeutic songs for children suffering from various forms of trauma entitled Music Box Therapy.
